The Path from Soul to Pain

- Searching for meaning in troubled times

By Brian Cattermole

Hello and welcome to this introduction to my book. The Path from Soul to Pain represents over thirty four years of personal growth conducted by myself. Some of the ideas portrayed evolved from other peoples' work, but most is my own creation.

Written in plain english, extensive use of line drawings and tables helps break the monotony. I also made considerable use of analogies, metaphors and step by step instructions. For instance, where else would you find: The tree of stuck energy, or The cardboard tube effect? Or for that matter, very advanced information on emotional release?

Total word count is currently 71,300 words. It is 367 pages and contains an introduction, seven chapters, plus an extensive appendix and index.

The Path from Soul to Pain (the precis version)

This book is my second attempt to write a definitive book on the meaning of life. The first was written in 1992 and took about five years to complete. At 70,000 words and 120 A4 pages, 'The Human Condition' was quite an achievement, considering my poor command of English composition at the time. But it perfectly demonstrated my knowledge - as of then. A publisher even offered to print it (I eventually declined). Unfortunately (for the book), my knowledge grew faster than my attempts to update it. So I put it aside and moved on to my next project.

By 2003 it was totally out of date. I now saw it only as a measure of how far I had come in my own Self development. However, it did contain a lot of valuable ideas which could be used as part of a new book (at this stage, yet to be defined).

In 2002 I created the basic 'Path from Soul to Pain' model and was teaching it in my training programs. With audience feedback and much brainstorming, it evolved into an impressive 5,000 word document.

Sonya was on one of my courses, She was a 27 year old occupational therapist working with mental illness. At the time, the Path concept was a struggle for her. It contradicted just about everything her 'official' training taught her.

Several weeks later, she told me that my Path concept now made more sense than all her other training. I was considerably relieved. With that established, it made sense to build a book around the idea of pain and see what developed. To help define the direction, a sub heading of: 'searching for meaning in troubled times' was added. This could be read as either a question OR as a statement.

The next phase was to lay out chapters, then subject headings. Initially, chapters four and five were a single chapter. But it grew too big, so was split. About five months later, the book was all but complete. At 63,000 words it was shorter than the Human Condition book, but ten times more powerful - in terms of the content. It was first printed off just prior to Christmas 2004.

Part of the way I work is to write something, then set it aside for a while before revising it. The date is now August 2005 and I have just been through with a fine tooth comb and tidied up grammatical errors (there were hardly any).

On a broader scale, I also revised the subject matter. The book needed hardly any changes - which surprised me. But the appendix needed expanding. I had other material that I now wanted to include. Some of it is so new it hasn't even been introduced into my training programs yet.

The appendix is now the biggest section of the book. Its content is also the most advanced of its type (in my purely unbiased opinion). The total word count now stands at 71, 389 words. It is still a long way short of my 121,000 word book: 'Technicals Made Easy' which I put together in 1999. I consider the Path book to about the right size now.

The 'Technicals' book demonstrated that I could write about left brain topics just as easily as right brain ones.

The Path book:
This book represents the sum of my 34+ years of Self development and personal growth. It is how I understand life on Planet Earth, and our place within it. Because we don't come with an owners manual when we enter this world, you could consider this book to be a suitable replacement manual.

However, it is MY truth. It is how I understand MY life. Although it was written by me - for me - it has universal appeal. All I know is that it makes sense to me, and the people who have read the draft version told me it made sense to them also. There are seven chapters, an introduction and appendix. An index is found on the final few pages. It is now 360+ pages, counting the covers etc.

Introduction:
The shortest section describes my background plus some of what I went through as Self development. It sets the scene for the Path concept and that I h
ave experienced the very pain I then talk about.

Chapter one: 'The Human Condition'
The Human Condition chapter describes some of the many factors that make us human. Pain gets a mention in the very first sentence. After that, it just goes downhill. No, just joking. But the book is serious about the 'WHY?' factor. I don't claim to have the absolute best understanding of 'WHY?' but I do have some possible answers. That is what the book progressively introduces.

Chapter one is intentionally 'light and fluffy', focussing on broad concepts, rather than specific personal hurts. That comes later. I introduce a concept called: 'lessons'. It is one of the foundation principles which pops up regularly through the entire book. The idea of reincarnation is introduced to show that these lessons didn't just happen, but rather, were a legacy of various abuses experienced in some of our previous lives.

And we discuss how those lessons then manifest in this lifetime - through a process I call: 'Picking Up The Tab' (PUTT). To complement and manifest the PUTT process, young children develop 'Survival Strategies'. We discuss all of that.

Finally, readers are shown some of the ways that lessons are responsible for our pain and misery. It also sets up the Path concept in the next chapter.

Chapter two: 'The Path Concept'
This chapter is arranged around a central schematic. The diagram itself is not much to look at - just a series of boxes and interconnecting lines with arrows to show flow, as seen here:

Chapter two
is just on 7,478 words long. It explains every aspect of the diagram (that I am aware of) and shows the precise and perfect mechanism at work.

Some of the sub-headings listed under this chapter are little more than a paragraph or two long. But that is enough to get the message across. It would be possible to write an entire book just on the contents of chapter two, without stepping outside of its brief. But I didn't follow that line. What I have produced here is much more encompassing.

Themes expressed in this chapter pop up regularly throughout the book.

Chapter three: 'Universal Life Principles'
Universal Life Principles (ULP's) are at work in our lives. They are universal in application and fully automatic in operation. We are usually unaware of them. As such, they hold considerable power over us. When a situation exists that causes you to react, you can guarantee these principles are at work.

Some Principles are mind bogglingly powerful; others are subtle or even sublime. And a few seem to make no sense whatsoever. Yet, all have their roles to play. Every one of these Universal Life Principles is intimately connected with our Lessons.

What I showed in this chapter is that some ULP's are linked to others. For instance: 'Like attracts like' will bring people and events to you. The Mirror Effect then sets up how we react to them. Then the third ULP (I'm OK, you're OK) takes over and sets us up with feelings, so that we can respond appropriately.

The intention of this chapter is to demonstrate that life is carefully orchestrated - but only to a certain degree. Our Free Will can change our direction at any stage. These ULP's just serve to provide information so we may make informed choices.

Chapter four: 'Emotions'
Now we are starting to dig really deep into our pain - our emotional pain, that is. And we look at some of the checks and balances that I feel need to be included with emotional issues. It is this chapter where the real culprit is unmasked for what it is.

Whether we want to admit it or not, our emotions are at the heart of our pain. Emotions are the driving force behind EVERY physical health problem, from baldness to an ingrown toenail, colds to cancer.

This chapter introduces us to the two emotions we live by, namely: LOVE and FEAR. Love produces the warm fuzzies we all enjoy. Fear produces the cold pricklies we hate. In this chapter we concentrate exclusively on the Fear aspect, for that is where our pain comes from.

This chapter is essentially a snippet extracted from my Zenna Master Training Program. The information has stood the test of time - and much debate. It intentionally stirs up your emotions.

Chapter five: 'Emotional Release'
It is one thing to awaken the sleeping dragon (your emotions). It is quite another to know what to do next. This chapter explores actual emotional release.

It includes a list of factors associated with any form of emotional release, But the main purpose is to show what it really takes to release those emotional issues, once awakened and identified.

The chapter concludes with a look at some of the benefits possible, after a regime of emotional release has concluded.

Chapter six: 'Health'
I could have made chapter six fill the entire book in its own right. But that role will fall to the sequel: 'Zenna - Powerful Healing for the 21st Century'.

Instead, I identified three very common health related afflictions, and showed how they are the result of unresolved emotions. And we identify the lessons that might be attached to those emotions.

This chapter looks at just three common concerns: cancer, arthritis and cigarette smoking. Then we look at what they all have in common (actually, quite a lot).

Chapter seven: 'Energy Exercises'
By time the reader has reached this part of the book, they could be feeling a little bit overwhelmed. So we introduce some FUN. Natural energy is absolutely safe. This chapter teaches you how to explore different aspects of it.

We dive into emotions a little deeper with a couple of 'self-do' exercises. And the chakras get a decent look-in. The chakras provide powerful clues as to our health - at all levels. I show you how to measure them, and what the results mean. And we end the chapter with some guidelines on developing a sensitivity to energy.

That concludes the formal part of the book. All that remains is an extensive appendix which serious students are welcome to embrace. It is at a very advanced level. It also has universal appeal. Note that my unique style of writing makes even the most highly technical of ideas understandable.

Appendix:
In this section I include a 'basic Zenna Healing' guide for anyone wanting to learn this awesome healing technique. And then the ZennaE* process is discussed. Although I do not teach you how to do ZennaE*, enough information is provided to give you an idea how serious emotional release really works.

We look at the Inner Child and how to get the maximum benefit from it. Then we hit the 'top shelf' items: defining bottom lines, showing how to link known pain to Life's Purpose, and what the Zenna Master Training Program entails.

A series of unconnected items rounds off the appendix. I include relevant parts of my own history and show which bottom lines I released. I then describe how some came about. A list of my known past lives dating back to about 500BC successfully rounds off this missive.

Item last is an extensive index.

This book is designed to be controversial. It challenges many existing ideas about life, the universe and the 'WHY?' factor of pain. All I ask of readers is that they accept only that which is of value to them, but please do not deny the validity of the remainder. It is MY understanding, after all.

This book is now available for purchase. I do not personally hold any stock, so please do not ask about purchasing it from me. However, Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble have it on their web sites. I expect it will filter through to bookshops anytime soon. With the information shown below, you should be able to order it. Whitcoulls have it in their computer. But they will have to order it in - that could take a couple of months. Better (and cheaper) to go direct to Amazon.com
